American Falls Reservoir

American Falls Reservoir is formed by American Falls Dam, which is a major facility on the Mindoka Project. Managed by the Bureau of Reclamation, Snake River Area Office, Bingham County; and the city of American Falls, this 87 square mile (56,000-acre) reservoir offers 100 miles of shoreline. When completely full, the reservoir is the largest reservoir on the Snake River and in Idaho.

I have received your request for information and maps for trails around American Falls Reservoir on Reclamation land for ATV use. Currently, we do not have any maps showing roads and trails. Due to the complexity of access in many of the areas, we have not completed the process that would open various locations for ORV use. Bureau of Reclamation lands nation-wide are closed to ORV use unless officially opened. You can, however, use existing roads unless they have been closed to protect valuable resources. Any mapping of existing roads is not in a form that we can provide or that would be helpful without more detail. We would recommend that your members or other interested parties traveling to this area and wanting to travel on BOR lands in the vicinity of American Falls, please contact our office for detailed information and directions. Our address is:
Snake River Area Office - East, 1359 Hansen Ave., Burley, ID 83318.
Our phone number is (208)678-0461 and my extension is 32. Please feel free to contact me by e-mail, regular mail or telephone if you have any other questions or need additional information.

Sincerely,
Pam Brown
Recreation/Concession Specialist

The BOR (Bureau of Reclamation) Land is closed to off-highway use. But the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) is open to riding. However there are no trail maps or information available from BLM that is accurate. This area is along the river, south and west of the reservoir. There is a lot of riding done there, but you need to get with local riders who know the area, or contact Clark Collins below.

(Get to know him, he is one of the good guys helping keep riding areas open!)

This 10,600 acre playground of clear, shifting, white quartz sand is known for its unique beauty and exceptional recreational opportunities. It offers outstanding activities for ATV's, dune buggys, and motorcycle riding as well as horseback riding, picnicking and playing in the sand. Winter activities include sledding, tubing and snowmobiling, viewing the approximately 2,000 elk, 50 moose, and 1,400 mule deer that winter in the vicinity. The Dunes range from 10 feet high to over 4,000 feet high. The Dunes are located 10 miles west of St. Anthony. ORV users are strongly encouraged to avoid damage to vegetation and impacts to wildlife so that use of this unique area may continue.
